I consider myself a bit of mascara snob – I’m always looking for the next greatest innovation in lash-ery.
In my never-ending hunt for a great drugstore mascara (so far nothing from the drugstore has surpassed my beloved Covergirl LashBlast Volume mascara), today I’m testing out something from Rimmel London.
The Rimmel London Wonder’fully Real Mascara in the shade Black 001 is a lengthening keratin mascara (it’s always a bonus when I find shampoo that has keratin – great for smoothing and strengthening hair).
The applicator on the plastic wand is a bit longer and thinner than a standard mascara applicator. The size made it easier to manoeuvre around the curve of my eye and coat all my lashes.
I’ve never been one to add a second coat of mascara (only for mascara reviews) – I find that a second layer makes my lashes look kind of spidery (I’m sure it’s a personal preference thing). With the second coat, I found that the product would ball up on the very tips of my lashes, and I had to comb the excess away.
I was ready to give this mascara a raving review, however when trying it a few more times I found that if I applied the product from the very root of my lashes towards the tip made a huge amount of product would gunk up right on my lash line, to the point where I had to grab paper towel to wipe it off and start over.
For this mascara to work for me, I need to stick to a single coat, as well as apply it carefully – I need to wipe off the excess product before combing it through my lashes, start combing it in from the middle of my lashes towards the ends, then slowly start combing it near the root. That being said, although it seems like a lot of work, it’s really a quick fix, so I’ll definitely continue to use this mascara in my day-to-day.
