Tutorial: Neon Leopard Print

Here is a step-by-step tutorial, to make neon leopard print nail art.  It's great for beginners, and with a little practice, you'll be doing them like a pro.

1)  What you will need:  A dotting tool, and neon green (I used "Wild Thing" by Pure Ice), a neon pink (I used "neon Pink" by Kleancolor), and a black (I used "Black Out" by Pure Ice).
2)  Paint a solid green base.

3)  Using a dotting tool and your neon pink polish, or the nail polish brush itself, create 2-4 well-spaced out "blobs".
4)  Using the small end of your dotting tool and a black polish, draw 2-3 dots, bracket shapes, or "C" shapes on the perimeter of each pink blob.  Do this with a light hand, and a small amount of black polish.
5)  Using the small end of the dotting tool and the black polish, add small and large dots in any empty green space.
6)  Voila!

I've got some hauls and an indie review coming up next week, so stay tuned.  And as always, don't forget to 'treat yo' self' to a mani!

Reviews-Day Tuesday ft. Krafty Gurl Designs

Happy Reviews-Day Tuesday!  Today, I'll be reviewing the "Gloss It!" topcoat, from Krafty Gurl Designs.  Straight from the Krafty Gurl website, "Gloss It! is a non-yellowing topcoat and sealer that dries to a high gloss shine. Gloss It top coat can be used over any nail polish to dry all layers fast with a brilliant shine. This top coat is ultraviolet resistance and is formulated for applications where high surface gloss is desired, as well as when high impact protection is needed."

Ingredients:  Ethyl acetate (solvent), butyl acetate (solvent), cellulose acetate butyrate (a low moisture absorption ingredient that has an extremely high level of impact strength, but it soft and pliable), nitrocellulose (film forming), acetyl tributyl citrate (biodegradable plasticizer - ingredient that increases flexibility within the nail polish, to decrease chipping - without it, polishes are brittle), adipic acid/neopentyl glycol/trimellitic anhydride copolymer (a film-forming and a suspension agent), isopropyl alcohol (solvent), acrylates copolymer (a film-forming agent), PEG-8/SDMI copolymer (a film-forming agent), benzophenone-1 (UVA/UVB absorbers), and etocrylene (UV protector).
Now, I can be quite picky when it comes to topcoats.  The 3 main things I look for are 1)  A short dry time, 2)  Maintains my mani (no immediate chipping), and 3)  Dries and makes a glass-case-like seal for my nail polish.  Let's see if "Gloss It!" delivered.

LOOK. AT. THAT. SHINE. (Natural light).

In the shade.
I think it's safe to say that I'm officially a fan of this polish.  It dried in about 30 seconds, and it maintained my mani, until I took it off, 4 days later.

4 days of wear.
Four days in, and I experienced minimal chipping, just at the ends of the nail.  And let me just say, that in order to test the durability of this topcoat, I put my nails through the ringer - baking, crafting, my "real-life-job", and more, and "Gloss It!" held up like a champ - for the record, the main chip on the index finger was totally my fault (I jammed my finger into a drawer mid-baking, twice, and on the second time, it chipped).  In addition to the durability, this topcoat gives what I call a "glass-case-like seal", which means that once fully dry, it is rock hard, which I looove!  It gives any chunky glitter a strong, firm seal (I always test how strong the seal is by seeing if my nails can make a good 'clickity-clack' sound on my keyboard).  Application was a breeze, the formula is very thin, but dries to a finish that would make you think that you put on 3 coats.

And now for the final test, the streak test!  Can this topcoat be put over nail art, which in my experience ALWAYS tends to make the design smudge and run?

Without "Gloss It!".
With "Gloss It!"
MINIMAL TO NO STREAKING!  Where has this been all my life?  I'm so used to having a great looking nail art design, only to ruin it, by putting on a topcoat that melts all my hard work.  Not the case with "Gloss It!" - no streaking (make sure to apply it with a light hand, and minimal strokes, of course).

I'm officially a convert!  No more cheap drug-store topcoats, I think I'm going to have to stock up on a couple bottles of Krafty Gurls "Gloss It!", which is currently on the Krafty Gurl website for $6.50 for a full-size bottle - a small price to pay to have your faith in topcoat restored.  Krafty Gurl also makes fantastic-looking glitter topcoats, and nail art accessories.

Zoya Haul with swatches

Fun fact:  I wrote this post a few weeks ago, but never published it - I was saving it for a slow week.  I clicked on the title for the completed saved draft, and *poof*, a blank page.  I hope I remember to include everything!  Here is my latest small haul, ft Zoya.  All swatches have 2 coats.

L - R "Blaze, Penelope, Channing"
My very first PixieDusts!  This makes me an official Pixie, right?!?!
L - R:  Arabella, Godiva, Carter (all PixieDusts/textures)
I bought these a little while ago when the "dream box" packages were buy 1, get 1 free.  The dream boxes come in many sizes, and some come in pre-planned groups, chosen by fashion designers, or the Zoya pixies.  You also have the option to make your own, so I made 2 small dram boxes (which come in a cute black box, that is made specifically to hold Zoya polishes.  If you like Zoya, and want to stay updated on their promotions, which they have quite frequently (especially on holidays), follow them on twitter - @ZoyaNailPolish - tell them that Shawna from On A Chalkboard sent ya *wink*.

Until next time, don't forget to treat yo' self to a mani!

Indies & Undies ft. Rainbow Honey (with coupon code)

It's that time again - Reviews-Day Tuesday!  Let's-a-go! (Heads up, this post is PICTURE-HEAVY!)

Today, I have a bundle of mini's from Rainbow Honey.  Straight from their facebook page, "Rainbow Honey is a love for color with a penchant for sparkle! Chief Designer Dee draws inspiration from her favorite things: video games, cartoons, literature, robots...the list goes on! " is 3-free (free of Formaldehyde, Toluene, and Dibutyl Phthalate), and is vegan friendly - never tested on animals.

I just got a brand new camera, so I took a TON of pictures - however, I'm still getting used to the camera, and all the fun settings, so to eliminate any confusion, the descriptions of the polishes are straight from the Rainbow Honey website.

I was sent this adorable bundle of 5 mini polishes:

Let's start with 2 of the top glitters from 2013:

The Kraken - "The Kraken is a marine jelly with a blue and green glow filled with glitters, shimmer, and the sea monster’s own holographic Crashing Boom Bang!".  The best thing about this polish?  Say it with me, folks, "NO. UNDIES. NECESSARY." - that's right, this jelly gives such good coverage, you don't even need to do a coat of undies.

1 coat.
2 coats.

Magic Cake
- "Turn any manicure into a neon blast with these bright glitters; word on the street is this cake will make you trip!"  Greens, blues, and pinks, oh my!  I put this glitter topper over a purple creme polish.

2 coats.
Rainbow Honey's "Magic Cake" over Pure Ice's "Jailbait".

Next is a not-yet-released polish.  It's from the upcoming "Midnight Garden Spring Collection" - which is being released mid-March 2014.

Papillon - A clear base, packed with iridescent glitter, silver shimmer, and pink & purple chunky glitters in hex shapes, and butterfly shapes.  How fun!  I am such a sucker for fun-shaped glitters!  I put "Papillon" over a white-to-pink gradient.

Rainbow Honey's "Papillon" over a gradient, using NYC's "French White Tip", and Sinful Colors' "Beverly Hills".

I saved these next 2 for last because, because they go with the upcoming holiday, Valentine's Day.  They are 2 of the 5 polishes in the "Sweet Talk" collection, which are officially up for sale HERE.

Sweet Talk - "A decadently sweet collection of pastel glitters in a white jelly with hidden shimmer".  This one is also "no undies necessary".  More specifically, it has red, purple, and light blue glitters, in a white, shimmery base.

Macro shot.
1 coat.
2 coats.

XOXO
- "A ravishing blend of glitters and flakes in a clear base for easy use over any manicure!".  The micro glitter in XOXO was so shiny, that I thought putting this over gold undies would really give it that "ooh la la" factor.
Macro shot.
1 coat.
2 coats.
Rainbow Honey's "XOXO" over Revlon's "Gold Coin".

These were all so much fun to play with!  Great colour variety, and I loved how different the packaging is, from retail brand mini bottles.  I'm used to seeing those little chubby mini-bottles like the ones at Sally's Beauty Supply, but these ones really stand out, and they make for much more space-friendly storage.

Rainbow Honey nail polish can be found on their official website - their full size bottles retail for approx.  $10.00 per bottle, but you can also purchase multiple full sized or mini bottles from certain collections.  And for all my beautiful readers, use promo code "ILOVENAILBLOGS" to receive $5.00 off your next order (code expires March 31, 2014).
